A Great Tool For Supporters

Have you had a chance to check out my.jerrybrown.org?

It’s a great website for any Jerry supporter, from those who want to organize phone-banks and house parties every weekend to those who simply want to stay connected to various efforts throughout the state.

Visit my.jerrybrown.org to get started.

From there, you can create your own profile, complete with choosing specific ways you want to help with the campaign. You can then join groups of other supporters in your area, sign up for events, and build your own personal fundraising page to raise money for Jerry.

If you’re feeling industrious, you can also create your own groups and events. Right now, we have everything from Solar Supporters for Jerry to Writers for Jerry, and almost every county across California. My group, site feedback, is an easy way for other users to report any issues they encounter while exploring the network.

At the very least, it’s a fun means to see who else is involved with our effort and what they have to say. Post a comment in the live comment stream, and everyone who visits the site will get your message.

Feeling stuck? Watch the video below to learn how to get started. And as always, thanks for everything you do to help us get California working again.

We have a winner!

Guest post from Maggie who ran our official Jerry Brown t-shirt design contest:

We’re excited to have gotten so many entries for Jerry’s t-shirt design competition. The polls were close, but one clear winner came out on top…

Congratulations to Kevin Plottner!

Here’s what Kevin had to say:

I’m honored. And thrilled! And I can’t resist a contest.

I’m a Bay Area graphic designer (Some Inc.) and big admirer of straight-talking, budget-conscious Brown. The same Jerry Brown I witnessed flying coach (!) last year. Also a great fan of California, my adopted home. A regular guy with a wife, a daughter, and concerns about where this great state is headed. Willing to help, one tshirt at a time!

You can buy your very own t-shirt affixed with Kevin’s colorful design here at our online store. All proceeds go to the campaign efforts, so you’ll be politically fashionable for a great cause.

Thanks to all of you who voted for your favorite, and be sure to come out and cast your ballot when the real race happens on November 2.

Welcome To The Big Show

Tomorrow night marks the beginning of a series of three debates between Jerry and eMeg. The action starts at 6pm on the UC Davis campus.

California political junkies can rejoice: If you’re as excited about a live, face-to-face discussion on the issues as I am, you can follow the action on Jerry’s Twitter page.

We’ll be monitoring the big event closely. Staffers will be tweeting real-time reactions from Jerry’s account with the hashtag #CaGovDebate.

We encourage the Twittersphere leg of our support base to take a look at the feed and re-tweet our messages as much as possible. After all, given our opponent’s penchant for straying from the truth, there’s bound to be a Mega Myth (or ten) that needs busting.

We’d also love to hear your own reactions to the live show, so feel free to tweet your original 140-character thoughts with the same hashtag #CaGovDebate.

Tune in live at KTVU, KCRA, or KSBW (channels vary throughout the state). You can also watch or listen to an online stream at websites for KCRA, The Sacramento Bee, Capital Public Radio and UC Davis.

And of course, if you’ll be in our near Davis for the festivities, be sure to stop by our official watch party at Bistro 33.

A New Way To Contribute

This week, the campaign rolled out a fun feature for supporters to use on Facebook.

If you want to help our effort using your social network, these tools are perfect for you. You can post a specific tab on your own profile that allows anyone who clicks on your page to donate to the cause directly. Click the ‘Give Now’ tab on Jerry’s Facebook page and follow the instructions to get started.

We’ll also be rolling out themed badges in the coming weeks. You can spread these badges to show your support, add them to your profile, and encourage your friends and family to contribute through a simple click of the badge.

Yesterday, we launched our first badge, Environmentalists for Brown, in conjunction with Jerry’s visit to a solar plant in Newark where he condemned Proposition 23. Check it out on his profile and add it to your own if that’s an important issue for you.

The more these tools spread, the better, so whether you add a tab to your page, post badges, or both, be sure to take advantage of Facebook’s status and sharing functionality so your activity remains high in your friends’ news feeds.

And, of course, if you have your own concept for a badge, leave a note on Jerry’s fan page. Our campaign wouldn’t be possible without the mosaic of ideas and energy from our support base.

Why CA’s Disability Community Supports Jerry

Guest blog post from Catherine Campisi. Catherine served as the director of the California Department of Rehabilitation from 1999-2006. She is co-chair of the statewide disability community’s movement to support Jerry, and she has been active in advancing the rights of individuals with disabilities for most of her life.

Jerry Brown has a strong record supporting civil rights in general, and disability rights in particular.

In 1976, he appointed activist Ed Roberts to serve as the Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation – the first person with a significant disability to fill the role. Ed, who is often recognized as the “Father of the Disability Rights Movement,” went on to establish California’s Independent Living Centers and became a world- renowned advocate for people with disabilities.

Throughout his career, Jerry signed a variety of disability rights protections into law, making California the leading state on disability rights long before the enactment of the ADA. Notable actions include:

  • Government Code section 11135 et. seq., which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, gender, disability age, etc. in programs receiving state funding.
  • Provisions related to “blue curb” or disabled persons parking.
  • Provisions promoting the hiring of persons with disabilities by state agencies.
  • Funding for programs serving students with disabilities in California’s public colleges and universities.

As Attorney General, Jerry has placed greater emphasis on enforcement of laws that protecting persons with disabilities. As our next governor, he will skillfully, justly, and fairly treat programs and services for persons with disabilities so disproportionate cuts are not made on some of the most vulnerable Californians.

If you’d like to join a group of people with diverse disabilities supporting Jerry Brown for Governor, email cadisabilitycomm4jerrybrown@gmail.com. Please also support the cause on Facebook.

The People Have Spoken

Last week, the social media team launched our first-ever Facebook poll to find out what you, our supporters, think the best name for the policy tab on our website should be.

The results are in, and ‘Solutions’ emerged victorious (in a narrow victory over ‘Visions to Actions’).

We encourage you to check out our new Solutions page for Jerry Brown’s comprehensive, detailed plans for job creation, education, and the environment. You can also peruse the page for information about his past record as a public official in California.

Since this is a grassroots effort woven together by the ideas of our colorful fanbase, we’ll be launching future crowd-sourced programs and polls to solicit your feedback on our digital presence. Right now, our t-shirt design contest is in full swing, so please submit your artwork for a chance to be featured on Jerry Brown apparel for sale in our online store.

Got any comments right now? As always, leave them here and we’ll get back to you.

Wear Your Badges With Pride

If you’re as addicted to Facebook as I am, you’ve probably noticed the campaign has recently rolled out a fun new feature.

We’ve partnered with SF-based Momentus Media to bring you, our socially-networked supporters, themed badges and polls to interact with, post on your profiles, and share with your friends.

The Jerry Brown button, rainbow flag, and clean energy windmill have garnered us thousands of new fans. The poll we unveiled earlier this week has provided us with insight as to what messages best resonate among our audience. Such successes mean we’ll continue to publish new badges and polls in the coming weeks.

So what can you do ensure these applications spread far and wide?

First and foremost, post each badge to your news stream. Check Jerry’s Facebook page frequently to see if we’ve released any new ones, and when we do, get on board. You’ll have the option to share with a limited number of friends, so be strategic with who you choose. I tend to share with people who live in California, have a large pool of Facebook friends, and care about issues – the most potent concoction for virality.

Next, when we release a poll, respond, and post news of your response on your Facebook wall so your friends can weigh in, too. Poll results provide crucial information for us, so the more participants we bring in, the better our campaign can work to meet the needs of its fanbase.

Finally, it seems simple enough, but be sure to click that trusted Facebook ‘like’ button beneath each badge and poll Jerry posts on his own wall. Many people don’t realize that the more ‘likes’ a post gets, the higher it will appear in your friends’ news feeds.

We also want to hear from you! Do you have an idea for an awesome badge or interesting poll? Please leave suggestions in the comments section. As always, this is a group effort, and some of the best ideas come from supporters themselves.

Meg Busters!

Keeping track of eMeg’s endless fibs and flip-flops can be an arduous task.

So we decided to put them all in one place. Yesterday, the campaign launched Meg-A-Myths.com, a one-stop resource for Californians to keep track of our opponent’s many falsities as the election draws nearer.

Check out the site for a comprehensive roundup of articles aimed at exposing the truth. Each time a new piece comes out shedding light on eMeg’s lies, we’ll be sure to post it.

You can also follow MegAMyths on Twitter, Like us on Facebook, and sign up for the “truly perplexing Myth Mail.” I suggest doing all of the above, not only so we can generate a big following, but more importantly so you, the voters, can stay informed.

As always, feedback welcome in the comments section. In the mean time, happy myth busting.

From Interns’ Mouth To Blog’s Ears

Our interns were so excited about the post I wrote about them yesterday, they decided to send me a blog piece of their own. Take a look at what Laura and Ariel had to say about their experience this summer (and get excited for their video to be released next week).

In Laura and Ariel’s words…

One of the things that we learned about campaigns and grassroots organizing in general this summer is the importance of pursuing every outlet and opportunity to the fullest. Social media and volunteer outreach are essential in getting the word out, especially on a low budget campaign. Email, Facebook, Twitter, my.jerrybrown.org, and the campaign website are organizing tools that can reach an almost unlimited audience.

We rely on you – our Internet savvy followers – to help spread our message to a broader audience. We are entering a new age of campaigning, and here at the Jerry Brown headquarters, we are rewriting the unspoken guidelines. We want the voters to come to us with their concerns, ideas, and proven interest in the future of California. With that said, please don’t think that we have forgotten about you.

One of things we work on as interns is Facebook outreach. With limited funds to spend on Facebook advertisements, we learned what it’s like to spread the word to many without using expensive resources. So we joined Facebook groups: college and county Democrat groups, environment groups, politically-minded groups, and even the “Ask Jerry Brown to support ferret legalization in California” group to encourage them to become a “fan” of Jerry on Facebook.  We strategically invite our friends to check out articles on Jerry or to watch videos about the campaign in order to attract attention back to his profile without exhausting our efforts.

If you are reading this right now, we can assume that you found this blog from one of the social media outlets we mentioned above. And this is where we ask you to do like us, click the “Share” button, re-tweet, email blast, and “Suggest to Friends” so that they, too, can get the real, un-manipulated truth, straight out of our headquarters in Oakland.

The office in and of itself is filled with college interns, recent graduates, and professionals taking time off just to work on the campaign; the majority of us are full-time volunteers. We try our best to leave no stone unturned and to make sure that your support is appreciated and feedback heard.

One thing we observed is the loose interpretation of the roles of each person in the office. With the exception of Campaign Manager Steve, Campaign Spokesman Sterling, and, well, Jerry, everyone is self-made and self-motivated. The two or three words that each person uses to describe their role is an understatement of all the work that they do here. Volunteer Coordinator is a simple title for reaching out to every county chairman, devoted patron, working professional, and student to help to spread the word. The same goes for our title, Intern.

That’s why we scripted, directed, edited, and starred in a video tour of the office. We wanted to show the personality and passion that bounces off the walls at our headquarters in Oakland – lime green and electric blue walls decorated with gear from past campaigns, family photos, art, books from Jerry’s personal collection, and, of course, us: the interns who occupy the long wooden picnic table that you see when you first walk in.

Believe us, with the exception of a few coffee or Diet Coke breaks, everyone is working nonstop to get Jerry back to Sacramento and to reach out to you, the voters of California.
